Pensioner treated for shock after robbery

An 80-year-old pensioner is in hospital suffering from severe shock after a gang forced their way into her Newry home last night.

At around 9.15pm, the pensioner was in her Upper Catherine Street home with her daughter when three men burst in.

Two of the men ransacked the house while the third kept the two women in the living room. At this stage it is not known if anything was taken.

The elderly lady was later taken to hospital suffering from severe shock.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who may have been in the area of Upper Catherine Street between 9pm and 9.30pm last night.

In Co Antrim, police are appealing for information following a robbery at a McDonald's fast food restaurant.

At around 11pm last night, two males – one armed with a handgun – entered the premises and held up staff. Police are investigating a report that a shot was fired – thought to be a blank round.

A blue metal box containing cash was stolen and the two made off on foot.

One of the robbers was wearing a navy jacket with a white hooded top and is described as 5ft 10" to 6ft tall.

Elsewhere, a 20-year-old man has been treated in hospital following a paramilitary-style shooting in Co Down last night.

The man was shot in both legs in an alleyway in the Crochan Court area of Bangor at around 8.15pm.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
