Officers face action over drink-driving charges

A total of 16 police officers are to face disciplinary action after being charged with drink driving.

Deputy Chief Constable Paul Leighton criticised the officers and said that this type of behaviour is “unacceptable.”

He added that they now faced misconduct hearings as well as the normal penalties imposed by courts.

Over the past five-years, approximately 60 officers have been convicted of drink driving offences, which could result in job losses.

SDLP policing board member Alex Attwood said that all 16 would be expected to lose their posts.

"The rule should be that people convicted of drink driving and serious criminal matters lose their jobs, that should be the principle and there should only be a very rare exception.”

DUP member Ian Paisley Jnr said each case needed to be considered individually.

Over the next few weeks, the PSNI are expected to launch their Christmas drink driving crack-down on motorists.
