Ballymena Council supports pitbull amnesty
Councillors in Ballymena have announced their support for a proposal for the first ever pitbull amnesty in Northern Ireland.
The decision was made during a meeting of Ballymena Council's Environmental Services Committee yesterday evening.
The amnesty will run for four weeks, commencing in January 2007, and all dogs handed over to authorities will be destroyed.
Ballymena Dog Warden Nigel Devine said that the amnesty development was prompted by the savage attack by a pitbull on a family out for a stroll with their pets in Randalstown Forest, County Antrim, earlier this month.
Pitbull terriers are classed under the Dangerous Dogs Act, and it has been illegal to keep them in Northern Ireland since 1976.

Economy Minister Launches Latest All Ireland Scholarships Scheme
Minister for the Economy, Conor Murphy, has announced the launch of the latest All Ireland Scholarships Scheme for students in Northern Ireland. The value of each scholarship is £5,500 per annum for the duration of their undergraduate programme. The All Ireland Scholarships were established in 2008 by JP McManus.

The decision by the UK Government follows strong representations by the Executive Ministers to ensure that those affected here are treated on the same basis as their counterparts elsewhere.
