RUAS interest in relocating to Maze/Long Kesh site

The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS) has today confirmed its interest in relocating their showgrounds at Balmoral to the former site of the Maze/Long Kesh.

The Society has formally asked Government if it would be willing to sell approximately 40 acres of the former prison identified in the Maze/Long Kesh Masterplan as a zone for rural, equestrian and associated showgrounds use.

Minister responsible for the development of the Maze/Long Kesh site, David Hanson said: “The potential development of the Maze/Long Kesh site continues to gather considerable momentum. The RUAS interest in the regeneration proposal is another positive step towards turning the Maze/Long Kesh concept into reality.

“By relocating to the Maze/Long Kesh the RUAS would be able to take advantage of the multi-sports stadium and other world class facilities likely to be available on the site. I have asked my officials to contact the Society directly to progress this matter further.”

Colin McDonald, Chief Executive of the RUAS said: “The Society is aware of the clear potential of the Maze/Long Kesh site and has enquired formally about purchasing it. The Society’s strategic thinking indicates that an outright purchase of a site would be a pre-requisite before a proposal could be considered by our membership.”

The Maze/Long Kesh Masterplan published last year included provision for a Rural Excellence and Equestrian Zone following an initial ‘expression of interest’ made by the RUAS to the Maze Consultation Panel whose 2005 report received the unanimous agreement of all four main political parties.
