Belfast park destroyed by vandals

Vandals left a trail of destruction worth an estimated £100,000 after destroying parts of a Belfast park with a mechanical digger.

Cherryvale Playing Fields was the scene of the devastation after the digger was used to break through a fence at the park and subsequently used to severely damage a cricket pavilion, uproot trees, smash doors and badly rut playing fields.

It was also used to break down and wreck a pole-mounted close circuit television camera.

Belfast Councillor Margaret Crooks, Chairman of the Parks and Amenities Sub-Committee, which has a responsibility for the property, expressed her anger at yet another major vandalism incident.

She said: “Ratepayers yet again have to meet the cost of this appalling damage. I would appeal to all residents, where they believe an incident of this nature is taking place, to inform the police as soon as possible.”

Councillor Crooks added that Council officials will be meeting with the Police in the near future to discuss what steps could be taken to prevent further attacks against Council property in this area of south Belfast.

Football matches scheduled to be played at Cherryvale on Saturday morning had to be cancelled. However, a number of teams and their supporters – some of whom had traveled from as far away as Cork – were unable to be contacted in time and arrived to find a scene which witnesses described as “mayhem”.
