Seamus Heaney wins TS Eliot prize

Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has been awarded the TS Eliot prize for his latest collection.

The TS Eliot Prize 2006 is awarded to the writer of the best new collection of poetry published in 2006.

Heaney won the prize for the collection 'District and Circle' (Faber) that describes his journeys on the London Underground.

Now in its 14th year, the TS Eliot Prize is acclaimed as one of poetry's most coveted awards.

Judges Sean O'Brien (Chair), Sophie Hannah and Gwenyth Lewis selected Heany's work as the winner from the 10 poetry collections short listed.

TS Eliot's widow Valerie presented the award, although Heaney, who is recovering from illness, was unable to be present for the ceremony.
