Son of Milltown killer is jailed for seven years

The son of Milltown Cemetery killer Michael Stone has been jailed for seven years today after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm.

Twenty-one-year old Gary Stone, from Ballybeen in Dundonald, was jailed at Downpatrick Magistrates Court today after he was convicted of beating his friend Jonathan Bowers.

Mr Bowers was left in a coma after the incident at a forecourt of a petrol station in July 2000. The pair had argued over a crashed car in the run up to the incident. He made a recovery but has been left with permanent injuries.

Stone had originally been charged with attempted murder but this charge was withdrawn after he admitted the lesser charge of grievous bodily harm.

Stone's father Michael was the loyalist gunman who carried out the attack of a funeral procession at Milltown Cemetery in 1988. He killed three people and injured 60 when he attacked the crowd with a handgun and handgrenades.

Michael Stone was released from prison in 2000 under the Good Friday Agreement.
