NI murder rate at all time low
The Chief Constable Hugh Orde has said that murder rates in Northern Ireland are at their lowest in 20-years.
During a meeting yesterday with the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Sir Hugh said that he believed that this was a result of the current move towards peace.
So far this year, the PSNI has investigated up to 19 murder – 16 of which were eventually cleared.
The Chief Constable told the Policing Board: "The homicide rate is currently the lowest it has been for 20 years."
"There's been a normalisation and paramilitary killings have dropped substantially."
He added that if there is such a thing, "there's a more normal murder rate now with domestic violence murders and the Friday night sort, the more routine types of crime."
Sir Hugh put down the decrease in in murders to the hard work and dedication of the PSNI crime operations branch which he described as the "jewel in the crown."
