Two die in Co Antrim road accident

Two people have died following a road accident in Co Antrim this morning.

At around 9.45am, a car, which had six people on board, was travelling along the M5 motorway near Newtownabbey when it left the road about half a mile from the Hazelbank roundabout.

Police report that two died at the scene and four people were taken to hospital. One person was seriously injured and the remaining three passengers suffered injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

The M5 citybound from Newtownabbey to Greencastle was closed for a time but reopened late afternoon.

Police have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward.

This latest accident brings to 13 the number of people who have been killed on the road since the start of the year. This compares to only one fatality for the same period in 2002.
