Minister vows to continue fight against drugs trade
Over £21 million of illegal drugs were taken off the streets of Northern Ireland in the last nine months of 2006 by law enforcement agencies, Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF), Paul Goggins said today.
During a visit to the PSNI Drug Squad headquarters, during which he received briefing on current trends, he congratulated all of the law enforcement agencies for their success in the fight against the illegal drugs trade.
Paul Goggins said: "Over £21 million worth of illegal drugs destined for our streets and schools has been seized since April last year. This shows that the PSNI’s Drugs Squad together with its law enforcement partners has had outstanding successes in helping to thwart the illegal drugs trade and safeguarding our community.
"While we may not suffer to the same extent as other parts of the United Kingdom from more sinister addictive drugs such as heroin or crack cocaine, we must never be complacent."
He continued: "The government along with its partners in the OCTF is determined that those who peddle drugs and prey on our young people and most vulnerable in society will not succeed and profit from their harmful trade.
"I would urge everyone to help the PSNI and the other agencies by reporting anything they know about drug dealing either directly to the police, or by using the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111 or the Customs confidential helpline on 0800 595000."

Proactive Police Operation Across Armagh, Banbridge And Craigavon
