Minister issues final regulations on smoke-free legislation

Health Minister Paul Goggins has today issued details of the final regulations that will underpin Northern Ireland’s smoke-free legislation that will come into effect on 30 April 2007.

The legislation will mean that smoking will no longer be permitted in enclosed public places and work places right across Northern Ireland, including bars and restaurants.

There are three sets of regulations in all, covering a range of issues including the definition of enclosed and substantially enclosed premises, exemptions, signage requirements, and penalties.

Health Minister Paul Goggins said: “There has been overwhelming support for the introduction of smoke-free legislation. Our purpose is to protect public health and save lives.

“All the indications are that businesses and the wider community will comply with the new regulations. I am particularly grateful for the continuing co-operation of the hospitality industry.”
