Man charged over toddler shooting

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting incident in which a toddler was injured in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The 34-year-old man from the Portadown area has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, aggravated burglary and having a gun in suspicious circumstance. The man is expected to appear before Craigavon Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.

The two-and-a-half-year-old girl was shot as she slept in an upstairs room of a house on St John's Court, off the Garvaghy Road in Portadown.

A gunman entered the premises and a number of shots were then fired into the ceiling of a downstairs room.

The child was hit by at least one bullet and was injured in the groin. She was taken to the Belfast Hospital for Sick Children where she underwent surgery. Her condition is currently described as stable.

The child's father, a second man and two other children escaped injury.
