‘Masterplan’ to help north coast tourism

Around £10 million has been spent on an initiative to promote tourism on the Causeway Coast and the Glens of Antrim.

The funding is part of a £50 million 10-year 'masterplan' to promote tourism in the area.

A range of new projects will receive funding including water sports and new signposts for the Antrim coast road linking Belfast to Londonderry.

NITB Causeway Coast development manager Kathleen McBride said a large proportion of the money invested came from European funding as well as from local authorities.

“The masterplan gave us an opportunity to focus those funds on projects that were already in the pipeline and could make an impact on the tourism sector.”

She also said a new Causeway coastal driving route had been created which would highlight the local attractions.

“Quite a few brown and white road signs have been going up in the region recently.

“If tourists and visitors follow the route, they will see many attractions in the area – we want to keep them in the region and let them see that there’s more than just the Giant’s Causeway.”

The Causeway Coast and Glens Masterplan Forum is being hosted by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board in Carrickfergus.
