NI goes smoke-free this month
On the day Wales goes smoke-free, Northern Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Michael McBride has welcomed the province's forthcoming ban.
“It is now only 28 days until Northern Ireland goes smoke-free. This is such an exciting time for public health right across these islands,” he said.
“The Republic of Ireland and Scotland already enjoy a smoke-free environment, and today, Wales will join that club. We will also soon enjoy the same health benefits from 30 April, with England following in July.”
Dr McBride has also praised the legislation, saying it will save lives. “It will significantly reduce our exposure to the toxic effects of second hand smoke,” he continued.
“Early indications in Northern Ireland show that more people than ever are trying to quit. If the legislation has given some people that extra incentive that they needed, then that can only be a good thing.”
The smoking ban will come into effect on 30 April and will mean that smoking will no longer be permitted in most enclosed and substantially enclosed public places, including bars and restaurants.

Smoking is the single most entirely preventable cause of ill-health, disability, and death in the UK. It is responsible for around 2,200 deaths per year in Northern Ireland.

NI Smoking ban set for 2007
Health Minister, Paul Goggins today announced that Northern Ireland’s smoke-free legislation will come into effect on April 30 2007. The legislation has now completed its parliamentary process, which means that smoking will no longer be permitted in enclosed public places and work places, including bars and restaurants.
