Police launch probe into Coleraine death

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for questioning in connection with the death of a man in Co Antrim in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A murder inquiry had been instigated following the death of 24-year-old Brian Edgar Caskey from Coleraine whose body was found in the Station Square area of Portrush shortly before 2am.

Police in the area said they hoped that a nearby CCTV camera would provide vital clues into how Mr Caskey had died.

The death was roundly condemned by politicians in the northwest including East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell who described the man's death as tragic.

UUP MLA David McClarty described the death as a distressing incident that had stunned the local community but the fact that "the incident has been recorded on CCTV" had been a major help to police in their investigation.

Condemning the man's murder SDLP MLA John Dallat also welcomed the benefits of CCTV saying that while it did not save the man's life, it may be a deterrent to others who act in a violent way in the future.

While a sectarian motive is not believed to be behind Mr Caskey's death, , police said they were interested in speaking to a taxi driver known to have picked up a fare in the area.
