Public urged to use water wisely
Northern Ireland Water is asking the public to help reduce the high demand on the water supply system by using water wisely.
As the weather heats up, the last week alone saw an increase in the demand for water in Northern Ireland.
William Duddy, Director of Customer Services, said: “As we all enjoy the good weather, Northern Ireland Water is working hard to maintain normal supplies across Northern Ireland.
“We have seen big increases in demand over the last few days – and we are asking everyone to be careful in the use of water. Of course we expect demand to rise particularly in rural areas where, for example farms need more water for animal welfare, and in popular local tourist areas. However, we are asking everyone to think carefully about the use of water around homes and gardens.”

For example:
- Using watering cans instead of hosepipes and sprinklers around the garden
- Using buckets to wash the car
- Not leaving taps running longer than necessary, for example when brushing teeth
- Trying to use the dishwasher and washing machine on a full load only
- Only filling the kettle to as much as necessary
- Mend leaky taps - taps that drip once a second lose 33 litres of water a day

Report shows NI drinking water in the clear
Northern Ireland's drinking water has met the required standards of cleanliness according to a new report The statutory 2002 Drinking Water Quality Report indicated that 98.55% of all tests carried out on samples taken from customers’ taps complied with the regulatory standards set by the Water Quality Regulations (Northern Ireland) for 2002.
