Masked gang robs Newry store

A gang of masked men have made off with a sum of money after robbing a Co Down retail store last night.

At around 7.30pm, staff were closing the Lidl Store in Castle Street, Newry, when they were approached by three masked men. One was armed with a wooden bat and another with a sledgehammer.

The gang stole a sum of money from the premises before forcing the staff into the toilets.

Police believe the three made their escape in a silver/grey coloured saloon car with an Irish registration number.

Elsewhere, police are investigating a shooting incident in north Belfast this morning.

At around 12.15am, two men were standing on Westland Road when a dark coloured car drove into the street. The men heard a number of shots and they ran off. There are no reports of any injuries.

The scene has been examined and a number of bullet casings have been recovered for forensic examination.

Police have urged anyone with information on either incident to come forward.
