Garda killer released from prison

One of the four-man gang who murdered Detective Garda Jerry McCabe has been released from jail.

Michael O’Neill served eight years of an 11-year sentence for manslaughter at Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon. Pearse McAuley, Kevin Walsh and Jeremiah Sheey were all imprisoned in 1999 of the killing of Garda McCabe, who was shot 14 times during a botched IRA robbery in Adare, Co Limerick in 1996.

They are likely to be released within the next two years.

O’Neill was met at the side entrance to the jail at 7am by two women. He made no comment.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said the Irish Government agreed terms with the party in 2003 and again in 2004 for the gang to be set free, as part of a deal to restore Northern Ireland’s power-sharing executive.

Speaking in 2004, he said: “Release of the Castlerea prisoners was part of an agreed sequence of statements and actions.”

The first of the four to be released, O’Neill had been given a standard remission of 25% for good behaviour off his 11-year sentence.
