Christmas partygoers urged to be vigilant
Christmas revellers have been urged to be aware of the dangers of so-called ‘date-rape drugs' over the festive period.
With reports that the number of drug rapes is on the increase, SDLP assembly member Patricia Lewsley said it was important for friends to stick together and watch out for each other.
“Unfortunately drug rape is a growing concern in Northern Ireland with an estimated two cases per week being reported to the Rape Crisis Centre,” she said.
“Pubs and clubs are the most common places for drinks to be spiked and the drugs are usually tasteless and odourless.”
She added that the consequences for the victims could be horrific, resulting from a loss of inhibitions and severe loss of memory.
Backing this call for vigilance, Sinn Féin’s Sue Ramsey added: “It is well known that the Christmas period sees an increase in parties and alcohol consumption, particularly among the young.
“Many club owners have already taken measures to combat this growing problem, however some owners and their door staff do need further training on the effects of date rape drugs.
“It is only through a co-ordinated response to the problem of date-rape drugs from bar owners, statutory agencies, local representatives and other interested parties that the problem will be effectively tackled.”
