100,000 children living in poverty in NI

Around 100,000 children are living in poverty in Northern Ireland, according to new figures released by a children’s charity.

Barnardo’s said nearly 50% are trapped in conditions that are so dreadful they are missing out on basic essentials.

It has called on the Northern Ireland Executive and the UK government to intervene in attempts to eliminate child poverty.

Barnardo’s NI director Lynda Wilson said the children would experience “the lack of choice and dignity that poverty can too often bring”.

“A further group are living in severe poverty,” she continued.

“Around 44,000 children and young people will be missing out on regular items that the rest of the community see as essential and poverty will have a particularly devastating effect on them.”

Ms Wilson also advised the government and the executive to provide more support for parents to get back to work “by introducing the New Deal for families and the full job centre plus programme.

“They could provide further support for families with a disabled child or parent and review the levels of supported training and employment of disabled young people,” she said.

“These are actions that the Northern Ireland Executive, together with the Westminster government, can take which will greatly reduce the number of children living in poverty and the kind of life chances they have.”
