City of Derry airport reopens

The City of Derry Airport, which was closed due to a “systematic failure of safety management”, has been re-opened.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ordered its closure last Thursday following an audit of safety standards. The licence of City of Derry was suspended after an inspection raised concerns about the drainage of the runway, the facility for parking planes and its bird control plan.

A British Airways flight to Dublin was the first to fly today. Other services operated by BA and charter flights are also resuming today, while Ryanair flights are not due to recommence until tomorrow.

Contractors carried out the necessary remedial work on the aircraft parking area, made improvements to the bird management system and carried out minor drainage improvements close to the runway over the bank holiday.

A joint inspection of the work by the CAA and the airport cleared the way for the reopening.

Councillor Joe Miller, a spokesman for the airport, said: “A team has worked tirelessly over the weekend to ensure that optimum safety standards are met and agreed remedial actions along with a full audit of the aerodrome and a review of the safety management system are in place.

“This is a positive result and we will move forward with confidence that we are working closely with the CAA and with their approval.”
