Landfill site closed as 'precautionary' measure
The government has closed a landfill site outside Lisburn after residents have complained that the area had become infested with flies.
The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) decided to close the controversial Mullaghglass site last night after an inspection took place.
An EHS spokesman said the fly population was seen to have increased, however it was “nowhere near infestation levels”.
“The site was closed as a precautionary measure to enable spraying and covering with soil,” he said.
“EHS will be reviewing the situation and if satisfied will lift the closure notice.”
Locals have complained about the site over the past weeks and have been forced to keep their windows closed because of the smells and flies coming from it.

Woodburn Reservoir Closed Following 'Scrambler Damage'
Public access to Woodburn Reservoirs is to be restricted as "scrambler damage escalates", NI Water has announced. The utility firm said that further damage to the Woodburn Reservoirs, Carrickfergus, over the Easter holidays has resulted in the decision to close access to some of its sites.

Controversial landfill site reopened
A landfill site that was closed after residents complained that the area had become infested with flies has reopened. The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) decided to close the controversial Mullaghglass site on Tuesday night after an inspection took place. However, the EHS has now said they are satisfied the fly problem is now under control.
