'Dynamic' Derry business park opens
The local economy in Londonderry has been boosted today following the official opening of the £726,000 Iona Business Park.
Secretary of State Paul Murphy, who conducted the opening ceremony, said the Business Centre was a "dynamic partnership between local people and public bodies". The park, which is principally funded by the Department of Social Development and the International Fund for Ireland, is expected to precipitate the regeneration of the Bogside and Brandywell areas of the city.
The project took place as a Community Economic Regeneration Scheme (CERS) and is the seventh kind to be completed in the city. The Business Park has already generated 13 jobs with the prospect of more being created in the near future.
Mr Murphy said: "Recent research showed that the Brandywell is one of the most deprived electoral wards in Northern Ireland but I am confident that this imaginative project will prove a catalyst in stimulating a number of initiatives that will bring jobs, training and a better life to people living in the area.
"This is the seventh CERS projects of its kind in the city where IFI and DSD, through its Londonderry Development Office, have worked in partnership with dynamic local organisations like Iona Enterprises. All the projects have proved very successful and have secured vital investment and employment."
The Secretary of State began his visit to Londonderry with a tour of the Ebrington Business Centre and met with local councillors.
Later today, Mr Murphy will meet with William Allen, the new Governor of the Apprentice Boys of Derry at the Memorial Hall.
The Secretary of State was also given a tour of the Verbal Arts Centre by Director Sam Burnside and before departure, met the PSNI District Commander, Chief Superintendent Peter Sheridan.
