A Northern Ireland doctor is reported to be in stable condition after being shot by robbers at his holiday home in South Africa.

The two robbers who entered his home in Cape Town shot 56-year-old consultant, Dr Richard McBride, once in the stomach on Monday night.

Following surgery to remove the bullet, Dr McBride's condition is described as stable.

Dr McBride is a consultant anaesthetist as the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

It is understood that Dr McBride's wife was with him at the time of the shooting, and that his daughter has since flown out to join her parents.
