Illegal use of fuel in Tyrone and Derry

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers yesterday seized 12 vehicles in Counties Tyrone and Londonderry.

They were seized in Strabane, Limavady and Derry by HMRC Officers testing for the illegal use of fuel in all types of commercial and private vehicles.

One private and 11 commercial vehicles were seized and returned after payment of fines, totalling £4,750.

HMRC Head of Detection Northern Ireland, Maggie Eyden, said: “Illegal fuel – whether used commercially or privately – undermines honest filling stations, steals cash meant for hospitals and schools and damages vehicle engines.

“All companies who had commercial vehicles seized will face audit which could lead to further charges being paid if other fuel misuse is detected .

“I would urge anyone who knows of fuel misuse or suspicious activities to call the MHRC Confidential Hotline on 0800 59 5000.”

Laundered fuel is red or green diesel which has been filtered through chemicals or acids to remove the government marker.

Chemicals and acids remain in the fuel and cause damage to fuel pumps in diesel cars.
