Former Tánaiste dies aged 84
Former Fianna Fáil Minister and Tánaiste John Wilson has passed away one day after his 84th birthday.
Mr Wilson had retired from the Dáil in 1992 after he had held the Cavan-Monaghan seat for Fianna Fáil in an unbroken run.
During his time as a TD, he held a variety of ministerial level posts and took over from Brian Lenihan as Tánaiste in 1990.
An academic, he was also a medal winning GAA footballer for Cavan, collecting two All-Ireland medals.
He was elected to the Dáil on his first attempt in 1973, and under Jack Lynch he was on the frontbench on his first day, a position he was not to relinquish until he retired from the Irish parliament in 1992.
In 1998, he was appointed as Victims' Commissioner and conducted a review of those affected by the violence in Northern Ireland.
He was subsequently appointed as a member of the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains - with a remit to help locate the remains of nine people missing due to the IRA campaign of the 1970s.
