Republic's unemployment rate rises to 4.6%

Unemployment in Ireland has risen to 4.6%, according to the latest statistics published in the Quarterly National Household Survey.

The survey, from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), showed that the decline in industrial manufacturing employment has continued, with the loss of almost 17,000 jobs in the year to the third quarter of 2002. Meanwhile, financial and other business services registered a fall of 1,600.

However, education continues to exhibit year-on-year growth, with an increase of 3,1000 employees, and 11,500 more people in the health sector.

The unemployment rate among men has risen by 1.2% in comparison to a marginal increase in female participation in the workplace. Nearly two-thirds of the rise in unemployed males occurred in the 25 to 34 year age group.

There were also 73,700 unemployed persons seeking full-time work in the third quarter of 2002, an increase of 8,700 over the same quarter last year, while the number seeking part-time jobs has fallen by 1,600 to now stand at 12,900.
