Police treat shooting as 'attempted murder'

The PSNI have said that the shooting of a police officer in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, on Saturday evening is being treated as attempted murder.

A 21-year-old man is being questioned over the shooting and a total of five people have been arrested, three of which have been arrested under terrorist legislation and one on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

The injured officer is not believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

Superintendent Mark Gilmore condemned the attack: “We are very serious about how we are going to respond operationally to this and we will be taking full measures to reassure the community and bring anyone to justice who feels that they want to further break the law.”

Security Minister, Paul Goggins condemned the shooting. He said: "Those within loyalism who refuse to move away from criminality have absolutely nothing to offer their own community or anyone else. I would urge anyone with information on this deplorable incident to contact the police."

Officers were responding to reports of a large crowd gathering on Castlemara Drive when the officer was shot in the back and a number of weapons were found in the Castlemara estate. CS Spray, a crossbow and baseball bats were seized and the trouble is being linked to a UDA feud.

Sir Desmond Rea, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, has urged those with influence to help defuse tensions within the loyalist community in the County Antrim town.

Sir Desmond said: “I am concerned about the tensions between rival factions of the UDA and would urge all those with influence within this community to help defuse tension and maintain calm in the area. The community should be reassured that the police will do all within their power to deal with those responsible for this violence and I would urge anyone with information regarding the events of Saturday night to provide it to the police.”

A civilian is also recovering in hospital after he was attacked with a knife during the violence.
