Newry Murder Accused Refused Bail

The 19-year-old accused of killing a Newry taxi driver has been refused bail by the high court.

Michael Jason Smith from Main Avenue in Newry is accused of murdering father-of-four Stefan Loughran in a Newry housing estate on 8th February 2007.

It is alleged that Mr Loughran had confronted Mr Smith, after he had punched the victim’s 9-year-old son, when he suffered knife wounds to his stomach and back which pierced his heart and lung.

Mr Smith’s barrister said that the accused was acting in self-defence as Mr Loughran had accosted him in a confrontational manner.

Following the incident, Mr Loughran was rushed to Daisy Hill hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7.45pm.
