NI Deputy First Minister To Launch Gay Pride Festival
Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, will launch Derry’s first-ever gay pride festival today.
The press launch will take place at Free Derry Corner today and the event will be staged in the city later this month.
To publicise the event, Free Derry Corner has been painted pink and the Rainbow Project, organisers of the festival, want to highlight their battle for equality.
Rainbow Project’s event coordinator, David McCartney said that there will be a focus on human rights and civil liberties and they will be sending out a strong message that they want equality and human rights to be respected.
Mr McGuinness’s appearance at the launch today comes just two months after the controversy over junior minister Ian Paisley Jnr’s criticism of the gay community in a Dublin magazine.
Foyle Pride week is being staged from August 13-18 as part of the Gasyard Feile.
