Figures shows rise in HIV population
It has been reported that the number of people in Northern Ireland who have been infected with HIV has risen to 342.
The Department of Health figures also showed that over a third of those infected have developed Aids with 77 people succumbing to the disease.
The figures have emerged in the run up to the annual regional sexual health conference being held for health and social care professionals in Newcastle, Co Down. Delegates to the conference will also be told that a growing number of heterosexuals are contracting the virus.
The conference, which is being held to mark World Aids Day on December 1, is also set to discuss a range of topics including reducing the risk of disease among prostitutes in Northern Ireland.
Delegates will also consider ways of preventing teenage pregnancy, promoting sexual health awareness among young people and developing sex education in schools.
