Man Rescued From Coleraine Cliff Face

A man has been rescued after climbing a cliff at Ballintoy, near Coleraine, without any safety equipment.

The man got stuck about 200ft up the side of the cliff without ropes or climbing aids, at about 1.45pm on Wednesday, when a member of the public spotted him and raised the alarm.

A rescue helicopter was scrambled from County Sligo and the Ballycastle Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team, along with Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team, came to the man's aid.

Coastguard Rescue Officers climbed down the cliff and were able to reach the man and lower him down safely.

A Belfast Coastguard spokesman said that the 27-year-old man decided, after a light-hearted discussion with his workmates, that it was a good idea to climb the cliff alone and with no safety equipment.
