Woman killed in A1 collision was local schoolteacher

The woman killed in a road traffic accident on the A1 just south of Loughbrickland, was a local schoolteacher.

The 29-year-old woman, Janine Hanna from Kilkeel, died when her Ford Fiesta was in collision with a DAF articulated truck at around 3.30pm yesterday on the A1.

Assembly members, the UUP's Danny Kennedy and the SDLP's PJ Bradley, extended their sympathy to the family of the victim. Both also called for urgent road safety measures to be put in place following yesterday's fatal road accident on the A1.

Mr Kennedy said that the local community was devastated by the tragedy: "This is another tragic loss of life on a road which is notoriously dangerous. The death toll on this road is unacceptable and it is high time we had action to improve safety."

He added that the community had already expressed its concerns on a number of occasions, most recently at a public meeting in Newry City Hall a few days ago.

Mr Bradley said that the entire community across the south east of Ulster were pleading for something to be done about this treacherous stretch of the A1. He said that this depth of feeling was evident at the meeting and questioned how many more lives had to be lost before action was taken.

Police have appealed for any witnesses who saw the accident to contact them at Banbridge PSNI station on tel. 028 4066 2222.
