Misleading mailshots continue to target local business
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s, Trading Standards Service (TSS) has issued a fresh warning concerning companies which are continuing to post misleading mailshots concerning the Data Protection Act.
With the bogus mailshots looking official in appearance, the letters warn of criminal offences if companies do not register with them (at a cost of £95) and some letters also mention penalties of up to £5,000.
A TSS Spokesperson warned: “The Information Commissioner has never issued this type of letter to businesses so if companies receive such correspondence its not from the proper source.
“These letters look official and can seem quite threatening to businesses. What they want is to pressure businesses into paying their registration fee. No businesses can afford to lose money in this way so it is vital that companies check mail carefully and do not respond to letters without first checking thoroughly.
“The TSS are interested in businesses who have been targeted in this way as we are presently working with our colleagues in the Office of Fair Trading who are investigating these bogus mailshots.”
It has been revealed that the misleading mailshots have no connection with the Information Commissioner who regulates the keeping of information about individuals and that it has not circulated registration demands to people or to companies.

Met Office Issues Amber Weather Warning
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for Northern Ireland as Storm Isha is set to hit this weekend. On Sunday, 21 January, a wind alert will come into force at 6pm and will remain in place until 9am on Monday, 22 January. A separate yellow weather warning has been put in place between noon on Sunday and noon on Monday.

Scam Warning Issued Following Taylor Swift Ticket Fraud
The PSNI in Derry City & Strabane have warned people to be wary of scammers following a report this week of a person who thought they'd bought tickets online for a Taylor Swift concert only to find out they'd been swindled. According to police, it was reported that a person had found tickets for the concert on an online platform.
