Gardeners On Plant Disease Alert
A rare plant disease, which has been described as ‘potentially devastating’ has been discovered in a Rhododendron plant on the outskirts of Londonderry.
Sudden Oak Death has never been found outside a nursery before in Northern Ireland and the disease has the capability to cause significant damage to trees and plants.
A Department of Agriculture spokesman has said that gardeners in the Londonderry area should remain vigilant.
The spokesman said that the first thing that gardeners will see is shoots bending over and wilting and they will also notice the blackening of leaves.
In April 2002 the first outbreak of the disease was confirmed in the UK.

86,000 Young Trees Culled In Ash Dieback Control
Some 86,000 young trees have been destroyed to prevent the spread of 'Ash Dieback' into the wider environment, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. "Over 3,000 site inspections have been carried out since the disease was first found here in November 2012," said Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill.

Further Ramorum Disease Identified In Larch Trees
An increase in the number of new cases of Ramorum disease amongst larch trees has been recorded, leading to fears it could eventually become impossible to eradicate. Infection by the disease known as P. ramorum, caused by the fungal pathogen Phytophthora ramorum has been identified in Counties Antrim, Down and south Armagh.
