Report Suggests NI Mental Health Law Needs Overhaul
The law governing mental health services in Northern Ireland should be overhauled, according to the latest report from the Bamford Review.
The report is the last in a series of ten from the Bamford Review body, which was set up to look at Mental Health and Learning Disability.
The authors of the review say that the existing law is out of date and inappropriate for those who cannot make decisions for themselves.
The existing legislation puts public safety first, but the report recommends that the rights of the people involved should be put first.
The main recommendation of the review highlights the importance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of people with mental health problems and learning disabilities.
The review has taken five years to complete and cost more than £1m.
