Healy’s Double Boosts NI Euro Chances

Northern Ireland last night earned a well-deserved second place in Group F with a 3-1 win over Liechtenstein in their Euro 2008 qualifier.

Striker David Healy scored his first of two goals in the opening five minutes of the game, and another 11 minutes before half-time.

Kesh teenager Kyle Lafferty scored the third goal that brought Northern Ireland above Spain in the table, and earn them 16 points. Mario Frick scored a late goal for Liechtenstein.

New Northern Ireland boss, Nigel Worthington, praised the team, saying: “The attitude of the players all week has been superb – they worked hard and listened before going out and doing the business on the pitch.”

He continued: “We were a bit sloppy in the last five minutes but I suppose you can’t have everything in life.

“It’s a good result but now we have to focus on the next game.”

Northern Ireland now sit two points behind group leaders Sweden, and a point ahead of Spain. They will play against Latvia next month followed by Iceland.
