Assaulted teenager in critical condition

A teenage youth assaulted in west Belfast at the weekend is in critical condition in hospital.

The 16-year-old, who has been named as James Doherty, was assaulted in the Downfine Gardens area of the Turf Lodge estate. The youth was forced to the ground and kicked about the head during the attack.

He was taken to hospital where his condition was described as 'critical but stable'.

The boy's mother, Anne-Marie, said: "He's just a typical 16-year-old boy. He doesn't bring any trouble to the door, he's a good kid."

Police said that they thought the attack was carried out by one man and occurred at around 11:30pm on Saturday evening.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Grosvenor Road station in Belfast.
