Rural Homes Ban Ruled 'Unlawful'
A controversial ban on new homes in rural areas in Northern Ireland has been ruled "unlawful", according to a High Court judge.
Judge Mr Justice Gillen quashed a decision by former Stormont Minister Lord Rooker when he introduced the ban on planning regulation in Planning Policy Statement 14 in March last year.
Mr Justice Gillen upheld an application for a judicial review brought by Omagh District Council supported by two other Tyrone councils in Strabane and Cookstown.
The Chairman of Omagh District Council, Bert Wilson, said: "We are not advocating a planning free-for-all, but planning which is based on local development plans proposed by councils, which will ensure that our rural communities can continue to thrive and be sustainable and that the traditional rural way of life is protected and safeguarded."
