Sport Deaths Prompt Call For Screening
The deaths of four young players has prompted calls for heart health screening and greater availability of defibrillators.
The latest death, that of Patrick Devlin, 13, from Ardboe, occurred just four days after 10-year-old Patrick Breen from Drumquin died.
Last week, in the Republic of Ireland, two young players died in County Westmeath.
During a training session, Patrick Devlin said that he felt unwell just before he collapsed. A defibrillator was used but to no avail and Patrick was declared dead at Craigavon Hospital.
At the funeral of Patrick Breen on Saturday, his team mates formed a guard of honour as the coffin, covered in red and white flowers - the Tyrone county colours - was carried into St Patrick's Church in Drumquin for the funeral mass.
It was later discovered that he had a heart defect that had weakened his heart.
There have been calls made for the Health Minister to introduce screening for heart defects in young people that can lead to sudden death.
