Dame Anita Roddick Dies

Dame Anita Roddick, founder of ethical cosmetics chain the Body Shop, has died at the age of 64.

Dame Anita was rushed to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester on Sunday evening after complaining of a headache.

She died at 6:30pm on Monday night after suffering a major brain haemorrhage.

Her husband Gordon and daughters Sam and Justine were with her when she died.

Dame Anita set up the Body Shop, which specialised in beauty products that were not tested on animals, in 1976. The company was sold to French company L'Oreal last year.

Dame Anita had revealed in February that she had contracted Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion in 1971. She had only discovered she had the virus after blood tests two years ago.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid tribute to Dame Anita, describing her as "one of this country's true pioneers". He said: "She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market.

"She will be remembered not only as a great campaigner, but also as a great entrepreneur. As one of this country's most successful businesswomen, she was an inspiration to women throughout the country striving to set up and grow their own companies."
