Talks Due As Postal Strike Continues
Talks between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Royal Mail are due to begin on Friday as a strike over pay and job cuts continue.
Around 130,000 members of the CWU began a 48-hour walkout at noon on Thursday, after failing to reach an agreement during last-minute talks with Royal Mail.
A second 48-hour strike is due to take place on October 8. If it goes ahead, deliveries are expected to be severely disrupted until late next week.
Royal Mail has asked customers not to post mail in regular post boxes while the strikes are taking place.
The strikes are being held in a dispute over pay and fears of job cuts, due to Royal Mail's modernisation reforms. Royal Mail insists that it needs to dramatically reform in order to be able to compete with increased competition.
Talks aimed at ending the dispute continued until late on Thursday, but the deadlock continued.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: "Rather than accept a solution, the union continues to table unrealistic and unaffordable proposals."
Meanwhile, CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes criticised the government for showing "complete disinterest" in the dispute. He said: "This is a company that they own and they seem to have no interest whatsoever.
"There is no indication of their concern in the slightest - the government have been deafening by their silence."

Royal Mail workers at Belfast’s Tomb Street depot are currently engaged in unofficial strike action over the return to work of a manager who allegedly assaulted an employee. Around 350 workers walked out this morning in response to the decision made by Consignia to reinstall the manager to frontline supervisory duties.

Warning Issued Over Fake Royal Mail Missed Delivery Cards
Action Fraud has issued a warning over a fraud involving fake Royal Mail missed delivery cards. It is understood that 'something for you' cards are being posted through letterboxes claiming that a delivery couldn't be made.
