MI5 Move Into Belfast HQ
The high profile arrival of the UK Security Service to the Province has begun in earnest, with the first MI5 agents arriving in Holywood County Down this week.
While Bond-boss ‘M’ would not have been impressed with such an overt rather than covert arrival, counter-terrorist agents are nevertheless already at their desks in their new Northern Ireland headquarters.
In preparation for the security agency taking control of anti-terror operations the PSNI and Security Services are about to put the finishing touches to detailed agreements about intelligence sharing.
Once completed, MI5 will take over the lead responsibility for national security in Northern Ireland from the comfort of their new, multi-million pound building inside Palace Barracks in Holywood.
However, the new facility will also serve as a back-up headquarters in case MI5's London base, Thames House, becomes damaged or cut off by a terrorist attack.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Peter Sheridan has been negotiating safeguards about intelligence sharing with the Security Service.
He said that, in anticipation of the handover, which should take place by the end of the year at the latest , MI5 has been bringing the new Northern Ireland HQ into operation.
