Supermarket closure affects Enniskillen workforce
The Enniskillen branch of independent retail chain SuperValu is to close its doors in December, shedding its staff a few days before the Christmas period.
The news came as the supermarket revealed a programme of modernisation that is expected to last until the end of 2003, which will see the Enniskillen outlet completely refurbished. Three shop units will be situated on the ground floor, whole a large convenience store with additional floor space will be created on the upper floors.
SuperValu has given assurances that all staff affected by the closure will be helped to find alternative employment, or transferred to other supermarkets, but the employees face an uncertain future with no definite promise of re-employment from the retail chain.
Former Environment Minister and Ulster Unionist Assembly member Sam Foster has criticised the timing of the announcement, saying that it was "extremely concerning" for people to be made redundant in what will be the middle of the Christmas holiday period.
He added: "Fermanagh has lost many jobs in recent times and is in need of major investment, sooner rather than later. This must not go unnoticed by the new Minister responsible for investment."
