Murder Charge Dropped As Psychiatrists Report Heard
The submission of psychiatric reports on a man accused of a murder and of grievous bodily harm nearly two years ago has resulted in the charge being dropped – in favour of a lesser charge of manslaughter.
The murder charge against Arthur Francis Murray, 42, was reduced when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He has admitted killing County Tyrone pensioner Patrick McGrath, 76, who was found dead at his home in December 2005.
Murray also admitted attacking Mr McGrath's sister, Philomena, 68, and causing her grievous bodily harm causing serious head injuries and a number of broken bones during the attack.
He pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder her.
Murray, who lived yards from Mr McGrath at Killeen Crossroads near Coalisland, will be sentenced next month.
A prosecution lawyer said they were willing to accept the lesser pleas following three psychiatric reports.
