Murderous Beating Foiled By Passers-By
Only the intervention of passers-by stopped a serious assault in north Belfast becoming something a lot more serious.
A Protestant teenager has claimed that he thought he was going to die after he was attacked close to the spot where a Catholic school friend was brutually stabbed to death in 2005.
Johathan Jones, 18, and Scott Haggan, 19, were waiting for a bus on Belfast's Antrim Road last week when youths attacked them.
They were so severely beaten that Johathan was left with a suspected broken nose and cheekbones.
The latest attack happened close to where his friend, schoolboy Thomas Devlin was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack by loyalists in August 2005.
"When we were being kicked and beaten, all I could think about was that it was the same place where Thomas had been murdered.
Johathan, who had been in primary school with murdered Thomas and knew him well, said: "I couldn't believe it when Thomas was murdered. We had been good friends at school. I went to his funeral.”
Four people, including two minors, appeared in court on Monday on charges of attempted murder and grievious bodily harm in connection with the attack on Mr Jones and Mr Haggan.
