Burglars ransack pensioner's south Belfast home
There has been another incidence of a pensioner being targeted by thieves in Belfast yesterday.
The elderly lady's home in Kimberly Street, south Belfast, was burgled sometime between 10am and 4pm yesterday when she was out.
A number of items were taken, which have been described by the victim as of great sentimental value, including jewellery. One item stolen was a gold watch owned by the woman's late husband which had an inscription from Crusaders football club.
In a more serious incident last Wednesday, an 81-year-old pensioner was struck with a golf club during a burglary at her north Belfast home.
The woman attempted to stop the intruder but he struck her with a golf club injuring the woman's wrist and arm. The thief escaped with a quantity of jewellery and a chequebook.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon a man claiming to be from the Housing Executive robbed another pensioner in Benraw Green in west Belfast.
The bogus caller gained entry to the woman's home by saying that work was to be carried out on the property's garden.
A sum of money and a ladies watch were found to be missing and police believe an accomplice took these while the bogus caller kept the woman occupied in the back garden for around 20 minutes.
Police have urged people to ask for and check the validity of the identity of all callers before permitting them access to property.
Speaking following last week's attacks, PSNI Crime Prevention Officer Norman Gibson said that the number of these attacks on the elderly was on the increase and appealed to local communities to help protect these vulnerable members of society.
He said: "The people who are perpetrating these crimes are cowards. They are to be condemned by the media, by police and by their communities."
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Pensioner robbed in north Belfast home
Police in north Belfast have appealed for information following a distraction burglary at the home of a 90-year-old woman yesterday afternoon. The incident happened at around 1pm, when a woman called to the pensioner's home in the Huss Row area of city, claiming to be on a home visit from a local chemist.

Bogus callers rob pensioner in north Belfast
Police are appealing for information after bogus callers robbed the home of an elderly women while she was still in her house in north Belfast on Monday. Police investigating reports of a burglary at a flat on Shore Crescent were making house to house enquiries when they called at the home of a woman in her late eighties.

Pensioner attacked during burglary of her home
A 90-year-old woman was assaulted during a burglary of her home in Ballygowan, Co Down last night. The woman was confronted by a teenager after hearing noise in her kitchen. The youth then assaulted the elderly woman before escaping into an alley at the back of the house. Police believe an accomplice then joined the assailant.
