Norn 'Ireland Fans Relief As Aer Lingus Strike Called Off
This week's planned industrial action at Aer Lingus is off.
Up to 30,000 air passengers - including many from Northern Ireland travelling through Dublin to the European Cup qualifier match with Spain in Grand Canaria - can now breathe a sigh of relief as the latest dispute at the Irish 'flag-carrier' airline moves closer to a resolution.
SIPTU shop stewards met in Dublin Airport at the weekend and agreed to accept proposals from the National Implementation Body.
Their planned two-day work stoppage for next week has therefore been called off by the Union.
Both Aer Lingus management and unions will now engage in two weeks of intensive talks. The discussions will attempt to bring an end the row centring on the airline's €20 million euro cost-cutting measures.
Meanwhile, as Northern Ireland striker David Healy’s spectacular winning goal against Denmark in Belfast on Saturday enters the record books - as his 13th goal of the campaign – the Northern Ireland team, and many fans, travel to the Canaries on Wednesday to play Spain, but only with an outside chance of making the Euro 2008 finals.
Even if they beat the Spaniards they would need Latvia to take all three points against Sweden in that match - said to be very unlikely - with bookies suggesting odds of 66-1 against,
