Judging Soon On Pupils' Anti-Litter Adverts

Budding advertising executives have been putting their skills to the test in a Belfast City Council competition for schools to create their own anti-litter TV ad.

As part of the council's ongoing `Don't drop it, stop it!' anti-litter campaign, secondary schools across Belfast were challenged to devise and shoot their own 60-second ad.

More than 350 pupils took part in the `Litter, Camera, Action!` competition and their ads are being posted on the council website (www.belfastcity.gov.uk/littercomp) for the public to log on and have their say on what should be the winning entry.

Councillor Cathal Mullaghan, chairman of the council`s Health and Environmental Services Committee, said: “This is a really innovative way of making young people think about the issue of litter and I`m delighted that so many schools signed up to the competition.

“The standard of entries has been very high and I'd encourage each school to rally their family and friends to log on and vote for their ad.”

The competition, which is being sponsored by advertising and PR agency Fire IMC, involved pupils at 12 Belfast schools.

Workshops delivered by council staff and representatives of Fire IMC gave students tips on how to come up with an advertising campaign and create a relevant ad for television. Pupils also discussed littering and graffiti, and the council and general public's role in helping to tackle these issues.

The public voting will end on Wednesday 28 November and will contribute to the final decision which will be made by a panel made up of Belfast City Council and Fire IMC representatives.

The council`s Youth Forum will also make a contribution to the judging and the winning school will be notified on November 30.

The 12 participating schools were St Patrick`s College, Ashfield Girls School, Ashfield Boys School, St Malachy`s, Methodist College, St Mary`s CBS, Castle High School, Corpus Christi College, St Genevieve`s, St Gemma`s, St Dominic`s and St Louisa`s College.
