Spectre Of Drive-by Shootings Return

A man has been shot from a passing car in Belfast. In an incident that recalls many such attacks during the worst decades of the Troubles, a 28-year-old man was last night shot in the head and back in north Belfast.

He was walking through the Ligoniel area on Sunday night when a dark coloured car pulled up alongside him and one of the passengers opened fire.

The man was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police are yet to establish a motive for the attack and the incident has been condemned by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Jim Rodgers.

"It's horrendous that people still want to use a gun to go out and injure or even kill somebody," said Mr Rodgers.

"And as the Lord Mayor I would appeal to people to assist police with their enquiries so that those who were involved can be quickly arrested."
